GMAT question - If xy is not equal to... - Review

Type: Data Sufficiency

Difficulty: 4 star rating

If mathematical expression, what is the value of mathematical expression?

  1. mathematical expression
  2. mathematical expression
  1. Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient
  2. Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient
  3. BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient
  4. EACH statement ALONE is sufficient
  5. Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient

Explanation

Simplify the question

This is another case of being able to express the question in a different way to make it easier to answer.

mathematical expression

Is statement (1) sufficient?

Now that we have restated the question it should be clear to you that this statement is sufficient to answer the question, because we can rearrange the eqaution given in statement (1) as follows

mathematical expression

And therefore

mathematical expression

Is statement (2) sufficient?

Statement (2) tells us the value of mathematical expression but tells us nothing about mathematical expression and therefore is not sufficient to answer the question.

Choose an answer

Statement (1) is sufficient and statement (2) is not which means that the answer is A.
