If a and b are positive integers such that a/b = 23.15, which of the following could be the remainder when a is divided by b?

  1. 2
  2. 5
  3. 8
  4. 17
  5. 21

Explanation

The question tell us that

Therefore

mathematical expression

Where R is the remainder.

Since a, b and R are positive integers and we know that

` mathematical expression

R must be divisible by 3.

The only answer which is divisible by 3 is 21 and therefore E is correct.

    R does not need to be divisible by 21 but it must be divisible by 3.

    The only one of the answers divisible by 3 is 21 (answer E), and therefore answer E must be the correct one.
