Subject/verb agreement problems

Last updated: 13 Oct 2008

The last of type of sentence correction problem that we will look at in this tutorial is subject/verb agreement

Rule

The subject of a sentence must correspond to the form of the verb, and vice-versa.

Hint

If the subject or the verb changes in the answer choices, you possibly have a subject/verb agreement problem.

Example

For example, if the subject (person or thing doing the action) of a sentence is "Spain", then the verb used must be third person singular- for example is, has, does, goes, rules, demands, etc. If the subject is "the men", then the verb has to be plural: are, do, go, rule, demand.
